Description

Due to carelessness and neglect, many things that once had a bright presence in Kolkata are disappearing. Hearing the names of some places in Kolkata, one wonders why this place is named like this? For example, was there really a zoo at Dum Dum Zoo? Visiting Batakrishna Pal’s house on BK Pal Avenue, one learns how Edward Tonic, the great medicine for malaria, was made. Again, visiting the dilapidated houses on Gumghar Lane, one wonders whether people were really kept hidden here? Due to neglect, the machine that would have brought the fire brigade to the rescue is still lying there. Some people have heard of the interesting experience of watching movies in the halls that used to show Bhojpuri movies after they were closed. When I went to the Pen Hospital in Dharmatala and saw the golden nib Jharna pen, I wondered why this pen is not available even today. Walking through the streets of Kolkata, one comes across the Bosubari in Baghbazar to Derozio’s house on AJC Bose Road, the Parsi temple on Ezra Street to the Heduar Gobar Goh’s Akhra, which is about to be lost due to carelessness and neglect. Some heritage and some not, there are unknown stories and never-before-seen pictures of such places in Kolkata on the pages of this book, which cannot be found in such detail if you search on Google or Artificial Intelligence. These traditions have been preserved through writing and pictures in the two volumes of the book before they are lost from the city forever.
